Pal and Anu Chaudhary Abstract Recent advancements in network technology allow integration of different services on the same networking infrastructure. Thus, voice, data and video or multimedia traffic share the same transmission, switching and storage resources over a single network. This integration offers the user a single access facility to all communication services through a unified interface. Since Asynchronous Transmission Mode (ATM) networks support diverse services such as voice, data, video etc., therefore, ATM has been chosen for the use in the Broadband Integrated Service Digital Networks (B-ISDN). In this paper, we have developed a queuing model for the ATM networks in which three types of traffic e.g. voice, data, and video are considered. We analyze a discrete time singleserver (GI/1/1) queuing system with three priority queues of infinite capacity. The waiting time distribution for the packets in each class is derived explicitly. We have also derived expressions for probability generating function of the system contents along with the packet delay of these classes considered in the study.

A Probabilistic Priority Scheduling Discipline for High Speed Networks

In high speed networks, the Strict Priority (SP) scheduling discipline is perhaps the most common and simplest method to schedule packets from different classes of applications, each with diverse performance requirements. With this discipline, however, packets at higher priority levels can starve packets at lower priority levels. To resolve this starvation problem, we propose to assign a parame...

A Priority-based Routing Algorithm for Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs)

Advances in low-power electronics design and wireless communication have enabled the development of low cost, low power micro-sensor nodes. These sensor nodes are capable of sensing, processing and forwarding which have many applications such as underwater networks. In underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) applications, sensors which are placed in underwater environments and predicted ena...

Design of Arrayed Waveguide Grating based Optical Switch for High Speed Optical Networks

This paper demonstrates the design of an Arrayed Waveguide Gratings (AWG) based optical switch. In the design both physical and network layer analysis is performed. The physical layer power and noise analysis is done to obtain Bit Error Rate (BER). This has been found that at the higher bit rates, BER is not affected with number of buffer modules. Network layer analysis is done to obtain perfor...

Rate-Controlled Service Disciplines

We propose a class of non-work-conserving service disciplines, called the Rate-Controlled Service Disciplines. When coupled with suitable admission control algorithms, Rate-Controlled Service Disciplines can provide end-to-end deterministic and statistical performance guarantees on a per-connection basis in an arbitrary topology packet-switching network. The key feature of a rate-controlled ser...
